How does Kars4Kids help kids?

Kars4Kids’ charitable mission is to give children the opportunities and support they need to develop into productive members of their communities, taking a holistic approach that brings together family, school, and community for maximum impact. Most of the youth and family programming Kars4Kids funds is run by our sister charity Oorah, a national Jewish nonprofit. These programs include school placement and tuition assistance, tutoring, family and holiday events, summer camp and youth groups, all with an underlying focus on personal mentorship.

In addition to the thousands of children who directly benefit from Oorah’s programs, Kars4Kids helps kids through its small grants program funding local youth-oriented nonprofits, back to school giveaways in inner cities, and by publishing free educational resources for parents.

03

Where does Kars4Kids' money go?

In broad terms, Kars4Kids spends the money it raises in three ways: the largest share goes to our charity programs (as described above), the next largest chunk to advertising our car donation service (a necessary and closely analyzed expense for growth), and a small percentage to overhead. Unlike many charities that hire professional fundraisers or rely on third-party car donation processors, Kars4Kids handles all its marketing and operations in-house, allowing us to direct as much money as possible to the charity programs. For more detail, see our most recent public financial filings.

04

Does Kars4Kids only help Jewish kids?

As an organization founded within the Jewish community over 30 years ago, Kars4Kids’ programs primarily serve Jewish children and families, using their shared heritage and values to develop them into productive and engaged members of society. Our kids come from across the country and across the Jewish spectrum, spanning the full range of racial and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Kars4Kids is also present in the broader community - funding local youth nonprofits through our small grants program, putting backpacks in the hands of kids in inner cities, and publishing free educational resources for parents.

How do charity evaluators rate Kars4Kids?

Before relying on charity ratings, it’s worth understanding how they work.

There are no official standards governing charity rating organizations. No government body oversees them, no independent authority certifies their methodologies, and no universal criteria define what a "good" or "bad" charity looks like. Every rater creates its own model and applies its own assumptions. Their ratings are opinions, and reasonable people looking at the same data regularly reach very different conclusions. Some of the most widely cited charity raters are also surprisingly small, with limited staff, no external oversight, and little accountability for the accuracy or impact of their ratings.

Kars4Kids operates very differently from a typical nonprofit, and that difference matters enormously when interpreting our financial ratios.

Most car donation charities outsource their entire vehicle donation operation to a for-profit company. That company handles advertising, logistics, and vehicle processing — and takes a significant cut. The charity receives a clean grant and reports only that grant in its financials. No fundraising costs appear. The ratios look efficient because the real costs are hidden inside a third-party arrangement.

We don't do that. We run our car donation program in-house - our own staff manages the advertising, contracts directly with our national network of towing companies, junkyards and auto auctions, and processes the donations - all with an eye toward minimizing expenses and maximizing donation value. Every dollar we spend generating donations shows up transparently in our financial statements. Rating organizations that apply a standard nonprofit template to our financials are essentially penalizing us for being transparent about costs that other charities make invisible.

Our administrative overhead runs at under ten percent, leaner than the vast majority of charities our size. The advertising spend that rating organizations flag isn't waste; it's the engine that generates the vehicle donations that fund everything we do. An organization that outsources that engine and hides its cost would look better on paper while keeping less money for programs.

Some of our current ratings include:

Candid (GuideStar): Gold Seal of Transparency
GreatNonprofits: Top-Rated, based on real reviews.
Charity Navigator: Currently 3 out of 4 stars, primarily reflecting our financial ratios under their standard template, the same structural issue described above.
CharityWatch: Has been critical of us for years. A self-proclaimed watchdog, CharityWatch is a very small operation with no external oversight of its own methodology. We believe their analysis reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of our operating model.

We commissioned our own external review by nonprofit expert Doug White. See the results here.

Why does Kars4Kids advertise so much?

Kars4Kids takes a different approach to fundraising than the typical charity. Rather than competing for a fixed pool of charity dollars, we grow the pool itself. By offering an easy, free, and convenient way to get rid of an unwanted car, we turn vehicles that were headed for the junkyard into new charitable funding.

For us, advertising isn't about "awareness" in some vague branding sense; it's the mechanism that turns an ordinary household problem into charitable dollars.

That's also why our ads look the way they do. They skip the emotional storytelling and lengthy mission statements you'll see in typical nonprofit appeals. Instead, they're simple, memorable, and practical: got a car you don't want? Kars4Kids will pick it up. We're not chasing an immediate donation — we're aiming to be the name people remember later, when the car finally breaks down, the driveway needs clearing, or the problem becomes urgent enough to act on.

That's what makes the advertising spend an investment rather than a cost: it's money that grows the funds available for our charity programs. Our in-house marketing team tracks the numbers closely to keep that spend efficient, because every dollar saved on advertising is a dollar available for kids' programs.

Bottom line: more effective fundraising means more capacity for our charitable work.
