To find out, we asked real EV owners to share what they love, what frustrates them, and what they wish they\u2019d known before buying. Their experiences paint a realistic picture\u2014one with clear benefits, real drawbacks, and a few surprises along the way.<\/p>\n

What EV Owners Love<\/h2>\n

Quiet, Low-Maintenance Driving<\/h3>\n

Kate Wexell<\/a> is a writer and former Tesla Model 3 owner who purchased her vehicle while living in California.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was quiet, efficient, well-made, and required very little maintenance<\/a>,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

She also appreciated some of the unexpected tech perks. \u201cI was glad that I could play Stardew Valley<\/em><\/a> on the console.\u201d<\/p>\n

With fewer moving parts than gas-powered cars, EVs typically need less routine service\u2014something busy families often appreciate.<\/p>\n

Fewer Trips to the Gas Station<\/h3>\n

For Nate Runkel, a Pennsylvania-based media professional<\/a> who has owned a 2016 Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid for five years, fewer gas stops are the biggest advantage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I love most about owning an EV is how infrequently I have to put gas in my car,\u201d Runkel says.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless I\u2019m making a long-distance trip, I\u2019m very rarely using the gas engine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Convenience and Everyday Safety<\/h2>\n

Ginny Scales Medeiros has owned electric vehicles since 2007 and is a contributing author of What Is the Electric Car<\/em><\/a>. For her, the biggest advantages come down to everyday convenience and safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cI charge at home overnight, and my car is ready every morning\u2014no dark gas stations, or bad weather,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

For parents and caregivers juggling tight schedules, home charging can be a meaningful quality-of-life improvement.<\/p>\n

The Downsides EV Owners Don\u2019t Always Expect<\/h2>\n

Charging Can Be Complicated\u2014and Costly<\/h3>\n

\u201cIf I had a place to charge it at home, it would have been cheap,\u201d Wexell says. \u201cUnfortunately, superchargers cost almost as much as fuel itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Public charging availability also varies widely by location.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat surprises me most is how many charge stations there are in my area,\u201d Runkel notes. \u201cBut not every area is as lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Hidden Issue: The Fine Print Most Buyers Don\u2019t Read<\/h2>\n

Michael Ouziel is the owner of a Tesla Model Y and the founder of MMO Law<\/a>, a California Lemon Law firm. His practice focuses on helping vehicle owners hold manufacturers accountable when their cars fail during the warranty period. Through years of representing clients with defective vehicles, he has seen how overlooked contract terms can limit consumer rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cCertain manufacturers include arbitration provisions that limit a consumer\u2019s ability to bring disputes to court,\u201d Ouziel explains.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany of these contracts include a provision allowing buyers to opt out\u2014but the deadline is often short and easy to miss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taking time to review warranty terms and dispute clauses upfront can make a significant difference if problems arise later.<\/p>\n

So, Are EVs Worth It?<\/h2>\n

EVs offer quieter rides, fewer maintenance headaches, and potential savings at the pump. But they also require planning\u2014especially around charging access, travel needs, and contracts.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy PHEV has exceeded any and all expectations I had for it,\u201d Runkel says. \u201cThere\u2019s no doubt my next car will be a full EV.\u201d<\/p>\n
