Cash for Clunkers Watch
Kars4kids is carefully watching the impact of the Cash for Clunkers program not just on charities but on the economy. Here is some of what we’ve discovered:
As of Aug. 18, the federal government has only reimbursed auto dealers for 2% of the claims they've submitted through the program.
   
Nearly 80% of all applications have been rejected for a minor oversight.
   
Cash for Clunkers will not stimulate the economy if the program draws money from other consumer purchases.
   
The Cash for Clunkers program is likely undermining future car sales.
   
Kars4kids analysts expects that within 3-to 6 months, there will be a sharp increase in demand at auctions for its donated vehicles as a pronounced shortage in the used car market makes itself apparent.

Hundreds of auto dealers in the New York recently withdrew from the Cash for Clunkers program, citing delays in getting reimbursed by the government. The Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association said about half its 425 members have left the program because they cannot afford to offer more rebates and are also worried about getting repaid.
80% of the vehicles traded in are SUVs or pick-ups.
